Teaching kiddos about nutrition is as easy as trying new foods and pairing with an activity!

In teaching this week-long lesson to pre-school children, I learned that encouraging kiddos to try new foods can be very fun and very easy when done the right way! We associated every new veggie and fruit with a color of the rainbow for each day (Monday was Red, Tuesday was Orange, and so on). I always try to encourage that “trying” a new food does not mean eating it. Trying can be looking, smelling, touching, or just licking a food to advance to eating it. In my first ever iteration of this program I witnessed a young boy refuse any new foods all week until one day he smelled the food, then he touched it and licked his finger. Then… he ate the whole thing and LOVED it!! It was honeydew melon by the way. I was so impressed and reminded him that he was very brave for trying something new. Other days, I had parents reporting that their child who NEVER ate tomatoes at home, tried them in the program and now was requesting them at dinner. What a WIN!
